Congratulations Adam and Kimly

I spent some time down under recently. I flew to Melbourne to see the sights and to attend Adam and Kimly's wedding.

I was very impressed with the vibrant multi-cultralism I saw.

Adam and Kimly had 3 seprate ceremonies, Cambodian, Chinese, and Catholic.

I got to see alot while I was there, Phillip Island penguin parade, The great ocean road, and I even flew to Sydney for the day and saw the Oprea house amoung other things.

So congrats again Adam and Kimly. I had a wonderful time, you and your families hospitality was unbelievable.

X-mas Japan 07

General Shout-outs

Christmas in Japan. It's just not the same.

This year I'm going down to Kobe for a bit, they have some of the largest and most elaborate Christmas light displays in Japan. It dwarfs the displays I would see in "Winterhaven", a neighborhood in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona.

I'm going to stay away from KFC and Christmas cake (two Christmas traditions here), instead I'll play Santa-san for the kids in Miyazu and make Eggnog for friends in the evening.

It's just not really Christmas though... Unless you're home I guess.

Halloween 2007

Japanese Pop Culture

Halloween is over, this year I was "24" series star Jack Bauer. In Japan is more famous for his diet candy commericals than anything else... props such as this always make minute costume making easier.

Past costumes include: Ace Ventura, Ceasar, Robin Hood, Zorro, Napolean Dynamite, John Travolta (Saturday Night Fever), Johnny Knocksville... all made in the "make minutes before the party" tradition.

Many people don't know this outside of Japan, but the thing to do in Japan on Halloween is to dress up and ride the loop line around Osaka all night. I've never done that though.

Halloween pics in the gallery.

Broken Ankle

General Shout-outs

It sure doesn't look like much. Really it's not that big a deal, but at last weeks Miyazu league basketball game I broke my ankle. Thankfuly not in a bad way.

So the doctor said it looks like it's been broken in the same spot a couple times before in my life. I never knew.

So now I'm wearing a cast for a couple more weeks and probably will not be on the basketball court for another 6 weeks. They gave me the x-rays to keep until I get my cast off in case I have to show them to a new doctor.

Congratuations Brett.  I couldn’t think of a better way to break the record with your team 4-0 and still gunslingin’ at the fences.
Brett Farve now holds the record for most completions, most career wins, and now he has thrown more touchdown passes than any other quarterback in history.
It’s a proud time to be a cheesehead.  Go get’em this year guys.

Brother Ernie visits Japan

It's been a great couple of weeks having my brother in Japan. We went all over the place. The highlights being canyoning in Gunma prefecture and the Tokyo Game Show.

We also spent some time here in Miyazu. We took a long drive last weekend though the Tango area.

I hope it is not too long before he comes back for another visit, perhaps with my dad next year (hint).

All the pictures from the adventure are up in the gallery.

My Birthday is coming this weekend. We are having a small gathering here in Miyazu at the local drinking hole - Azitos.

31 years old? The time is flying by so fast, even faster since I came to Japan.

It's a bit hubris, but once the idea popped into my head I had to run with with it. My personal slogan for my 31st year on the planet, or just the weekend... we'll see.

For those of you coming to the party I look forward to seeing you.

Odori Beer Garden

Sapporo... The Milwaukee of Japan

I have returned from my month long trip to Hokkaido, where I took a course at a school in Sapporo. Going to a city famous for its beer I knew that there were going to be beer gardens. I wasn't prepared for the scope of which beer is consumed in this city. The central park was turned into one huge beer garden. Each block was sponsored by a beer. Sapporo, Asahi, Kirin, Suntory, and Otaru beers all had their own set-ups and each was packed with people on a nightly basis.

I stayed at a dormitory not to far away from school, which was in Maruyama koen. The streets in Sapporo are wide and named in a very logical pattern from the center of town. So for once in my time in Japan having the address to the place I wanted to go was all I needed to get there.

I took a few tours, traveled around just a bit, and met a slew of new people from all over. The weather was actually bearable, especially compared to the summer in Kyoto. I want to go back when its coverd in snow.

A ton of new pics from the trip have been added to the photo album.

The 2nd Annual Miyazu Beach Bash

There is a pesky typhoon scheduled to arrive in southern Kinki on the same day. Which means nothing serious for us but we will get lots of rain. So barring a big change in the weather the beach portion of the event will be cancelled. The beer garden will still go on as well as some after festivites.

Last year was a blast, and we don't want any rain to spoil our goodbyes. This is the last time I will be seeing many of you as I am leaving to Sapporo for the summer to take a translation course next week.

To those of you leaving Japan I hope that we can keep in touch and our paths will cross again. Kyoto-fu won't be the same without you.
